I started playing the cello when I was ten years old because a few years before that I saw Yo Yo Ma play on Sesame Street. When I started playing the cello, my mom would bring home CD after CD of cellists especially Yo Yo Ma and one day she brought home something particularly interesting. It was done by Yo Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble. I popped in the CD and heard a whole different sound than I was used to. I grew up on Country and Classic Rock and Classical music amongst other things, but I had never heard anything quite like this. I sat there and tried to name the instruments that were being played, but I could not figure them out. This was a CD that Yo Yo Ma wanted to put together to initiate unity and getting to know your neighbors and he wanted it to also be a reminder of the Silk Road in Asia. If you want to know more about it, the website is http://www.silkroadproject.org/. This was probably my first exposure to music from a different continent.

A genre of music that most of you would probably not guess that I listen to is rock, and I don't mean John Mayer, I mean bands like Three Days Grace, System of a Down, and Crossfade. My sister was the one who introduced me to this type of music, and as I got older I wanted to play more than just classical music on my cello. A perfect opportunity came along when I met a cellist who was in college at the time and he wanted to get a group of four cellists together so that we could play stuff written by Metallica that Apocalyptica also played. So about twice a week, we would get together and play Metallica which was much different than the Kol Nidre that I was working on in my private lessons at the time. The sight of us was pretty funny actually because you would expect three big guys in college to be in this group, but not with a 5'2" fifteen year old girl from the booneys. The cellist who asked me to play with them was actually the person who got me started on my first cello concerto ironically enough. Here is a link to one of the songs Apocalyptica did that we worked on:

I got a little older and my junior and senior year I played in a coffee shop. I was just playing some of the pieces that I had learned over the years as background music and a couple of guys who play guitar and sing also happened to work there. One day when I came in, one of the guys had brought his guitar and asked if I knew any classic rock and if I wanted to play some with him and of course I said yes. So I ended up improvising to some Classic Rock and we actually got a few gigs together too. Overall, I have been introduced to a lot of genres that we hear in America, but not particularly to those that exist in other countries. I am really eager to hear more music that is played all over the world!

  1. Good work, Emma. I'm glad you've already had such a wide variety of experiences with your cello--you wouldn't believe how much that really helps you grow as a musician. And I love that it all started with Sesame Street!

Would it interest you to know that I've heard a number of people speculate that the Heavy Metal and Classical music worlds actually have quite a bit in common--the emphasis on virtuosity, etc?

Oh, and if you haven't listened to "Appalachian Waltz" with Yo-Yo Ma and friends, you should definitely check it out. It's beautiful.

(As to the writing, try to remember that commas don't need to be rationed, ok? They help us breathe and help you organize your thoughts.)

  3. Emma, I didn't know about Apocalyptica before reading your blog. Thank you for sharing. I think they have a very interesting sound. It is great that you have had so much experience with the Cello. Maybe we should come up with a new type of fusion. American Rock -mixed-with-Sri Lankan- music.. with cello and percussion! What do you think?

  4. I love the silk road project! XD I watched a documentary on the Silk Road Project couple of years ago. It was really beautiful.
I never heard of Apocalyptica, but I'll be adding them to my play list. I really enjoyed listening to it as well as reading your blog. :)

  5. I love your Sesame Street story, especially since "getting to know your neighbors" is the goal of Sesame Street and the Silk Road Project. I'm glad you introduced me to "Yanzi" from the Silk Road Project over Thanksgiving. I love how seamlessly the voice and cello blend. I also had never heard of Apocalyptica before. They are awesome! I wonder why they decided on four cellos as opposed to a string quartet? Do you think we have any of their CD's in the library?

  6. It's not every day you meet a classically trained cellist that plays Metallica on the side and, in my opinion, there should be more. I have already experienced the "Emma listens to rock!?!?!" shocker, but I wasn't aware that you played it, also! I can't imagine how much that must have helped your skills, as well as the amount of joy it must have brought you.

    So, my only question is...

When will we get Metallica on the Uke?

  7. I love your taste in music. Throughout my years as a dancer we have used quite a few Apocalyptica songs. I have almost all of their stuff on my Ipod. I love that Yo-Yo Ma on Sesame Street is what got you interested in cello. Thats an awesome story. I got interested in singing because my dad never gives out compliments and when I was like 11 or so I was singing "My Girl" by the Temptations in the living and daddy said "Hey that sounded pretty good!" I've been singing ever since. :)

  8. I like your taste in music as well! Most people think that rock music is mostly loud drums and guitar and people yelling nonsense through a microphone, but they haven't listened to the right type of rock. Metal goes the same way as well, you just have to sift around a bit more to find the right bands who really like to showcase their talent.
